The Field: #NRGINDY Modern Metagame Breakdown

What’s the best green creature in the history of the Modern format? Throughout the now 8-year history of Modern, there have been a couple of acceptable answers. The first might have been Glistener Elf as part of the Blazing Shoal combo deck. Tarmogoyf and Noble Hierarch have also been Modern staples since the very beginning, so those are probably defendable answers. Maybe it’s one of the three green creatures banned in Modern: Deathrite Shaman, Golgari Grave-Troll, or Hogaak. Even Kitchen Finks had its day in the sun!

Whatever it may have been in the past, the answer to that question today is clear: Primeval Titan.

After the most recent bans of Oko, Mox Opal, and Mycosynth Lattice, Prime Time and new friend Dryad of the Ilysian Grove are taking over the format, and over 125 players tried to solve it for the Modern Trial at #NRGINDY. Here’s a look at what they registered:

The Amulet Titan combo deck was the most popular archetype in the room last Sunday, having more than double the number of players than any other archetype. Primeval Titan also appeared in 3 copies of GW Titan, a copy of traditional Titanshift, and a copy of Through the Breach Titan. A whopping 7 players registered Urza, Lord High Artificer even after losing Mox Opal, putting two copies of the deck into our Top 16.

A few players registered decks off of the beaten path on Sunday, and I’m happy to share a few of my favorites with you here:
