The Field: May 2019 CT Metagame Breakdown

Following another exciting weekend on the NRG Series, we’re back with another look at The Field: the full metagame breakdown from the May Championship Trial in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. This is only the second weekend that we’ve played with War of the Spark, and the cards have shown up in full force; six cards from the set appeared in our Top 16 decklists. We’ve seen Karn, the Great Creator pave the way for a wish-board in a variety of decks, including Tron, Eldrazi Tron, and Amulet Titan, the tag-team Planeswalker duo of Teferi, Time Raveler and Narset, Parter of Veils accounting for an uptick in UW-based control strategies, and even Finale of Promise in UR Phoenix decks. Here’s how the new War of the Spark cards are affecting the top of the Modern metagame:

Just because they didn’t get any new toys from War of the Spark doesn’t mean that Modern’s heavy hitters didn’t come out in full force. Archetypes like Humans, Golgari Midrange, Bant Spirits, and Burn still accounted for over 20% of the metagame and didn’t have any new additions to their decklists. War of the Spark certainly had an effect on the rogue decks in the tournament, however, accounting for nearly 40% of the metagame. Here’s the rest of the field:

There were a ton of fun archetypes that showed up in Cedar Rapids, and of course, we’re here to provide you those sweet decklists. Here are some of our favorites that didn’t crack the Top 16:
