The Field: June 2019 CT Metagame Breakdown

Hello and welcome to another edition of The Field, where we’ll be breaking down the Standard metagame that was brought to the $5000 Standard CT last weekend in Gurnee, IL.

MTG Arena has continued to change the way that our Standard format is iterated upon, with new decklists popping up every couple of hours rather than every weekend. Since the last time we looked at Standard here, we’ve also had War of the Spark to shake things up even further. That Standard CT in March featured Mono-Blue Tempo and Esper Control as the two top decks, and boy, that’s sure changed! Only 2 players showed up to the June CT with Mono-Blue Tempo (one of them landed in the Top 8) and the Esper Control decks look absolutely nothing like they did last time. The decks we’re classifying as Esper Control are Planeswalker-heavy builds, often with copies of Command the Dreadhorde and no main-deck counterspells. Here’s a look at the most popular decks from the event:

Our “other” decklists represented nearly one-third of the metagame at the Standard CT and encompassed the full spectrum from Aggro to Control, with a splash of Combo thrown in there. Former Standard powerhouses such as Jeskai Control and Selesnya Tokens showed up in limited numbers, and of course, there were some off-of-the-wall decks too. Here’s the rest of our metagame:

And, it wouldn’t The Field without a look at some of the spice that players chose to register at the Standard CT. Here are some of our favorites:
