Keenan Davidson: U/R Breach in Indy

A few weeks ago, I played in what was considered amongst many to be the last of a “balanced” modern format after the unbanning of Jace and Bloodbraid Elf were announced. With the help of a close friend, I sleeved up a very familiar card that has produced a lot of success for me whenever the SCG Tour heads to Indianapolis. If you didn’t know already, I love cheating in fat monstrosities by any means possible, whether it is through mana-ramp, fast mana (SSG/Ancient Tomb effects) or with cards like Sneak Attack and Through the Breach. Last time the SCG Tour came to Indiana, I was unable to participate in the Open as I did not pre-register in time, but I was able to play in the Classic and provided many opponents with no chance to play “actual Magic” that day with the help of Simian Spirit Guide and an old ruling of Breaking // Entering:

Throughout the day, I played many non-interactive gamest by putting 15/15s and 7/7 Yawgmoth Bargains with haste onto the battlefield while ensuring I would have more than enough time to relax in between rounds. Unfortunately for my top 8 opponent on Jund Death’s Shadow, I put my friend Emrakul into play on the first turn of Game 2 in our match to ensure my Top 4 and invite to the Invitational. So if Emrakul was good enough the first time around, why not go back to the good ole’ faithful spaghetti monster for the Open?

We weren’t able to replicate our top 8 success this time, but we were close and if I could do it all over again, I wouldn’t change a thing in the list. I ended up going 11-4 losing to Burn, 4 color Company (with Domri Rade), G/B Tron (after casting Molten Rain against my opponent 5 times and still losing to natural tron) and B/W Eldrazi and Taxes (Flickerwisp is a hell of a card). But I’m not going to bore you with the details as we are in a new Modern world. Lucky for me, this deck gets better with our friend Jace. Here’s my updated decklist:

The biggest changes I made from the original list was the addition of Jace and an upgrade to a couple of removal spells in Roast and Harvest Pyre. With the format adjusting recently on MTGO to R/G Ponza/Eldrazi and other Bloodbraid Elf/Tarmogoyf decks, the need to have an answer to kill something with more than 3 toughness was necessary. Adjusting to less Lantern and Affinity and the up-tick of Thought-Knot Seers and Reality Smashers, Abrade became more of a liability in the main deck. Harvest Pyre gives the deck a scalable answer while also removing excess fetch lands from our graveyards if Emrakul does not kill our opponents with one swing. Roast was the other addition as answering Death’s Shadows and Gurmag Anglers were an issue when I played the deck in Indy.

Supreme Will outperformed, as being able to play Impulse or conditional countermagic was always great. If you’re looking for a control deck with a great finish, I highly recommend taking U/R Breach for a spin as the deck gives you all the tools needed to win the variety of matches that Modern as a format provides.

Hope to see you guys soon at one of the next Nerd Rage Championship Trials and if you want to talk more about 15/15s, find me on Twitter @King_Dmari32.
