Norman Cohen: The NRG Championship Series and the Future of Midwest Magic

Recently, Magic players have noticed what seems to be a lack of premium events in the Midwest in the future.

I feel compelled to write to you, our ever-growing player base, because the mission of Nerd Rage Gaming is to provide high-quality, premium events to Magic players throughout the Midwest.

Nerd Rage Gaming introduced the NRG Championship Series to the Chicagoland area in 2016, which consisted of ten $1,000 Championship Trial events and a 16-player invitation-only Championship with a prize pool of $2,500. I am incredibly proud to say that our event series proved to be very successful and allowed us to expand the series by doubling the Championship prize pool and implementing CTQ events hosted by other local game stores throughout the Midwest in 2017.

First, we would like to share the schedule for the rest of 2017.

Date Event
July 29, 2017 Modern CT
August 12, 2017 Standard CT
September 9, 2017 Legacy CT
October 7, 2017 Modern CT
November 25, 2017 CT (Format TBA)
December 2, 2017 Last Chance Qualifier
December 16, 2017 2017 Championship

The NRG Championship Series is here to stay. It has proven to be a successful and well-liked series of premium events throughout the Midwest. Due to our ongoing commitment to growing the NRG Championship Series, we have already developed a three-year growth plan for the series moving forward and intend on tremendous growth in the coming years. It is our goal to become the “Future of Midwest Magic.” Without further ado, I am incredibly excited to share our plans for the NRG Championship Series going into 2018. After considering feedback from players, judges, and potential CTQ affiliates, we are certain that the 2018 Championship Series will be the best year yet!

NRG Championship Series 2018 Expansion:

  1. $10,000, 24-player Championship Weekend. This will allow us to host additional CTs throughout the year.
  2. $5,000 Team Constructed Championship Trial with Championship invites for all 3 members of the winning team.
  3. Additional expansion of the CTQs throughout the Midwest in areas such as Madison, Milwaukee, St. Louis, and Indianapolis.
  4. Additional support from Wizards of the Coast. As an official WPN Premium Series, we already have a Planeswalker Points multiplier for all Championship Series events. In 2018, we hope that WotC will work with us to increase the Planeswalker Points multiplier and possibly award a Pro Tour invite to our 2018 Champion.

Lastly, on behalf of Nerd Rage Gaming I want to take the time to personally thank you, the players. I firmly believe that your satisfaction is key to the success of Nerd Rage Gaming and the NRG Championship Series. Without you, none of this would be possible. As always, Nerd Rage Gaming will continue to seek out new and innovative ways to improve our tournament series and more importantly, your overall experience at our events.

We invite you to join our official NRG Championship Series group on Facebook here.

Thank you and welcome to the future of Midwest Magic and the NRG Championship Series,

Norman Cohen
